NEW YORK -- The Angels fought and fought to stay afloat Tuesday night in a thrilling Game 1 of the American League Division Series, but the power of the Yankees' lineup sunk Anaheim in the end.
New York got four home runs, including a game-winning, three-run blast by Bernie Williams in a four-run eighth inning, and the Angels fell, 8-5, before 56,710 fans in Yankee Stadium.
The Angels brought a 5-4 lead into the eighth, courtesy of two solo homers by third baseman Troy Glaus, but Anaheim's relievers couldn't preserve starter Jarrod Washburn's gritty seven-inning, four-run effort.
Ben Weber took over pitching duties for Anaheim to begin the eighth, but after getting two outs, Weber walked Alfonso Soriano and Jeter in succession and was pulled in favor of lefty Scott Schoeneweis, who was brought in to face Jason Giambi. More >

NEW YORK -- Just when it looked bleakest for the Yankees, the Bronx Bombers produced another October miracle at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. Bernie Williams' three-run homer capped a four-run eighth, as New York downed the Angels, 8-5, in Game One of the American League Division Series.
The victory gives New York a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
The Yankees bashed four homers in the contest, continuing their season-long trend of longball magic. Williams combined with Derek Jeter and Jason Giambi to go 7-for-10 with three homers, seven RBIs and five runs scored to lead the Yankees to victory.
Jeter continued his trend of coming up big in the postseason, belting a solo home run off Angels starter Washburn with one out in the first inning to give New York a 1-0 lead. It was the 10th playoff homer of Jeter's career, his third in 26 Division Series games. More >
