SAN FRANCISCO -- Chuck Finley waited 16 years for his first playoff win. It only seemed like the Cardinals had been waiting that long for a National League Championship Series victory.

Despite numerous defensive lapses, Finley and the Cardinals passed a major gut check and held on for a 5-4 win Saturday over the Giants in Game 3 of the NLCS. Their win narrowed San Francisco's series lead to two games to one with Game 4 set for Sunday at Pacific Bell Park.

Finley gave up four runs in five innings for playoff win No. 1. He had been 0-2 in six previous outings, three starts, dating back to 1986 with the California Angels.

Eli Marrero's solo homer in the sixth off Jay Witasick broke a 4-4 tie and put Finley in line for the decision. Jim Edmonds and Mike Matheny also hit solo shots for the Cardinals. The St. Louis bullpen pitched four scoreless but often tense innings to close it out. More >

SAN FRANCISCO -- Could this really be the start of a new baseball term: home field disadvantage?

For the sixth time in the Giants' eight playoff games, the road team came up with a victory as San Francisco fell to the Cardinals 5-4 in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series before 42,177 fans at Pacific Bell Park. In squandering countless opportunities, the Giants left 11 men on base and now cling to a 2-1 lead in the series.

Barry Bonds, who had never homered before in League Championship Series play, crushed Chuck Finley's 1-0 offering into McCovey Cove for a dramatic game-tying, three-run homer in the fifth, but it took just two pitches in the top of the next inning to give St. Louis the lead back for good, as Eli Marrero's solo shot off Jay Witasick proved to be the difference in the game.

It was the fourth home run between the two teams, hardly what was expected at a pitcher's ballpark with a pair of veteran hurlers on the mound. More >
