SAN FRANCISCO -- They've seen plenty of challenges on and off the field this year. But as for the stuff between the foul lines, this is as big an obstacle as the Cardinals have faced in 2002. After watching a 2-0 lead turn into a 4-3 loss on Sunday night, St. Louis trails San Francisco three games to one in the National League Championship Series.
The Giants can secure their first NL pennant since 1989 with a win on Monday at Pacific Bell Park. Since the inception of the best-of-seven LCS format in 1985, only three teams have overcome 3-1 deficits to advance to the World Series. The last time it happened was 1996, when the Braves bounced the Cardinals.
Benito Santiago hit a two-run homer off Rick White in the bottom of the eighth inning for the winning runs. St. Louis had intentionally walked Barry Bonds to get to Santiago.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Early Sunday evening, far beyond the right-field arcade at Pacific Bell Park and floating in McCovey Cove was a large boat with a giant sign that read, "Pitch to Benito."
The Cardinals did, and they paid.
After Rick White intentionally walked Barry Bonds with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the eighth inning, Benito Santiago crushed a full-count pitch deep into the left-field pavilion at to give the Giants a 4-3 victory in Game 4 of the NLCS and a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
"It's just unbelievable," said Santiago, who predicted last week that the Giants would not only defeat the Braves and Cardinals but also win the World Series. "I don't know how to describe it at this time, but it's happening." More >
