Bullpen upgrades mark deadline
The non-waiver trade deadline passed with a flurry of deals involving contenders reloading their respective relief corps for the stretch run, as the Red Sox added Eric Gagne and the Dodgers made a swap for Scott Proctor. But the Braves were busiest club Tuesday, boosting their 'pen with three relievers and finalizing their deal for Mark Teixeira. Full story >

The Deal: With one move, the Red Sox now go from having an above average bullpen to an elite one. Gagne essentially gives the Sox a dominant closer to pitch the eighth, helping the lights-out 1-2 punch of Jonathan Papelbon and Hideki Okajima. Gagne can close when the young righty needs a rest.
