8/24/01 The Royals announced that they will pick up the option on the contract of closer Roberto Hernandez for the 2002 season. Hernandez, who was acquired from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Jan. 8, originally signed a four-year contract in 1998 with an option for 2002 with the Devil Rays.
8/23/01 Designated infielder Luis Ordaz for assignment and recalled right-handed pitcher Jeff Austin from Triple-A Omaha.
8/17/01 First baseman Mike Sweeney began serving a 10-game suspension for his part in the Aug. 10 brawl with the Detroit Tigers in Kansas City.
8/12/01 Recalled left-handed pitcher Scott Mullen from Triple-A Omaha and optioned left-handed pitcher Tony Cogan to Triple-A Omaha.
8/1/01 Recalled second baseman Carlos Febles from Triple-A Omaha to fill the open roster spot created by the trade of Rey Sanchez to Atlanta on July 31. Febles had been optioned to Omaha on July 1.
