Tony La Russa's father passes away
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com
ST. LOUIS -- Anthony La Russa Sr., the father of Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, passed away Tuesday at age 90. The elder La Russa, who lived in Tampa, Fla., had been in poor health for some time.
Tony La Russa did not manage the Cardinals in their Tuesday night game against the Milwaukee Brewers, and is not expected to be back with the team Wednesday. Third base coach Jose Oquendo is managing the team in his stead, with pitching coach Dave Duncan handling the pitching staff. It is unknown when the manager will return to the club.
"All our prayers go with Tony and his family," Oquendo said after St. Louis' 6-5 win over Milwaukee on Tuesday. "All our thoughts will be with Tony."
No details are available at this time regarding arrangements.
