Dusty Baker post-game quotes
Dusty Baker, Giants manager
Looked like you got one inning
ahead of where you wanted to be with your
bullpen. Obviously, in the World Series, those
things happen, right?
Yeah, they do. You
know, we thought Russ (Ortiz) had done his job, they
started hitting pretty good the inning before. We
were hoping to go in that seventh. Inning before,
he had gotten out of trouble. The home run by
(Scott) Spiezio, you know, that three-run homer puts you
back in the game, way ahead. We did get a little
ahead of ourselves in the bullpen. But they hit us
pretty good. A pair of treys in the seventh and
eighth, they just messed us up.
How much confidence was there
when it's 5-0 in the seventh after Shawon (Dunston) hits
the unlikely homer?
There was a lot of
confidence there. We realized these guys have an
outstanding offense. The fact that they can come
back, they got the last at-bat. There was
confidence, definitely, but we knew the game
wasn't over. The game definitely wasn't over.
They proved it, that it wasn't over.
Could this be classified as a
Well, one thing about
this club, we always come back after tough losses.
We've been doing it over and over and over. One
thing about this club, just seems like it never
comes easy and we never do it easy. I mean, we
knew it was going to be a tough day today. Here
we are going to Game 7 tomorrow.
You've been in a lot of big games in
your career. Have you ever seen a comeback
quite like what they did?
I don't know, not in a
while, especially not against our bullpen.
Everybody's bullpen is a little tired. You know, that
was a heck of a comeback by them.
Like I said, that three-run homer got them
back in the ballgame, they start off the next inning,
then that bloop double in there by Anderson, then
it came down to facing (Troy) Glaus in that situation,
which you're not crazy about. You know that
Glaus is prone to the strike out. We're going to go
for the strike out, you know, pitch to (Brad) Fullmer, walk
Spiezio, who has been hot, pitch to (Jose) Molina who
came in the game. That was the plan, just didn't
Is there some satisfaction that at
least you know you're going with Livan (Hernandez),
knowing his record?
We feel comfortable with
Livan. But tomorrow we're going to go with
everybody. I'm curious to see who they're going to
go with tomorrow. We know who we're going to go
with, we just have to see who they're going to go
With the Rob Nenn pitch selection,
the fast ball inside that Glaus hit, he seemed to
have a really good slider they were going out of
the zone and swinging at. Do you think he'll
kick himself for that pitch?
Well, I'm sure he didn't
want it in that location. Probably wanted it up and
in, and it got out over the plate. Was going to go
back to the slider, but didn't get to the slider. As
long as you're throwing the ball, sometimes it's not
going to go where you want it to go.
