SAN DIEGO -- The Giants today placed closer Robb Nen on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, with a strained right shoulder and recalled right-handed pitcher Jim Brower from Triple-A Fresno.

Nen, 33, who is rehabbing from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder last November, pitched in only one official exhibition game, a one-inning effort last Saturday vs. Oakland at Pacific Bell Park, although he did throw against minor leaguers in Arizona.
The big question was how Nen's shoulder would respond after throwing under game conditions. Nen himself wasn't totally optimistic, saying it would take weeks to regain full strength.
The club's all-time saves leader with 206 in a San Francisco uniform, Nen posted a 2.20 ERA with 43 saves last season, earning his fourth All-Star appearance. He added seven more saves in the postseason.
The Giants plan to use relievers Tim Worrell and Felix Rodriguez in save situations while Nen is out of action.
Brower, 30, was acquired by the Giants on March 24 from the Montreal Expos for right-hander Livan Hernandez, utility player Edwards Guzman and cash.
A fifth-year big leaguer, Brower was sent down to Triple-A Fresno last Saturday when the 25-man Giants roster was completed. He was expected to return to the big club, but hardly this soon.
