Umpire Foster hit by pitch
Official released from hospital after observation

MONTREAL -- Home-plate umpire Marty Foster had to leave Sunday's game
between the Expos and Marlins in the top of the fourth
inning after being knocked down by a Britt Reames pitch.
Foster, who suffered whiplash and a Grade 1 concussion, was taken off the field on a stretcher and brought to Montreal
General Hospital for observation.
Foster was later released from the hospital and flew home to Beloit, Wis.
According to an Expos spokesman, Foster will see a doctor and be evaluated
there.
"I called down [in the umpire's office] to see how he was doing. He had some
X-rays and I think he will be fine," Barrett said. "I felt awful about it,
but that's the game. Things like that happen unfortunately. I just hope that
he is OK."
With Marlins second baseman Luis Castillo at the plate, Reames threw a 1-1
pitch that went by catcher Michael Barrett's glove and hit Foster's mask.
Barrett was charged with a passed ball on the play.
"I got crossed up on that ball. I called for a curveball, and Britt thought
I put down a fastball," Barrett said. "I just tried to stay back on it and
it went over my head. It was a tough pitch to handle."
After he was hit, Foster went down on one knee. Head trainer Ron McClain and
his assistant John Adams rushed to Foster's aid. A few minutes later, Mike
Thomas, the Expos' doctor, attended to Foster.
Umpire Fieldin Culbreth replaced Foster behind the plate.
