TOP 1st: FLA 3, CHI 0: Having been outscored, 12-0, in the first inning through the first six games of the NLCS, the Marlins finally struck in the first inning. Juan Pierre led off the game against Cubs starter Kerry Wood with a triple to right field. Luis Castillo's fly ball to left field wasn't deep enough to score Pierre. Ivan Rodriguez then had a pivotal at-bat by walking on nine pitches after falling behind 1-2. Miguel Cabrera deposited a 1-2 pitch from Wood into the left-field seats for his third homer of the series and a 3-0 Marlins lead.
BOT 2nd: FLA 3, CHI 3: With one out, Eric Karros singled to right field against Marlins starter Mark
Redman. Alex Gonzalez doubled against the wall in center field, and Karros advanced to third base. Damian
Hill was out on a grounder to third base that scored Karros and moved Gonzalez up to third base with two
outs. Wood helped his own cause with a two-run homer to left field that tied the game.
BOT 3rd: CHI 5, FLA 3: With one out, Sammy Sosa went to a full count before drawing a walk. Moises
Alou then gave the Cubs their first lead of the game with a two-run homer to left field against Redman.
TOP 5th: FLA 6, CHI 5: Pinch-hitter Brian Banks began the inning with a walk against Wood. After Pierre flied out to center field, Luis Castillo walked. Ivan Rodriguez continued his hot hitting with a double down the left-field line to score Banks. Cabrera tied the game with an RBI groundout to first base that scored Castillo. Derrek Lee put the Marlins back on top with an RBI single to right field that scored Rodriguez.
TOP 6th: FLA 7, CHI 5: Jeff Conine led off the inning against Wood with a single to center field.
Wood then retired Alex Gonzalez on pop out and struck out Josh Beckett. Pierre singled to right field to put
runners at the corners, and Cubs manager Dusty Baker brought in right-hander Kyle Farnsworth to face
Castillo, who hit a chopper back to the mound that went off Farnsworth's glove for an RBI single.
TOP 7th: FLA 9, CHI 5: In his second inning of work, Farnsworth retired the first two batters he
faced and had a 0-2 count on Mike Lowell. The inning was just getting started for the Marlins, however.
Lowell singled to right field, and Conine singled to center to out runners at first and second. Right-hander
Dave Veres came in out of the bullpen and gave up a bloop double to Gonzalez that bounced away from Lofton.
Lowell and Conine scored and, although Gonzalez was out after trying to go to third base, he gave the Marlins their biggest lead of the game.
BOT 7th: FLA 9, CHI 6: After retiring eight consecutive batters, Beckett, who started Game 5 and was
in his third inning of relief, gave up a solo homer to right field to pinch-hitter Troy O'Leary. The Cubs pulled no closer, and the Marlins won a trip to the World Series.
