NEW YORK -- Aaron Boone officially became part of Yankees lore in the first minutes of Friday morning, as his walk-off home run in the 11th inning delivered the 39th pennant in franchise history and a World Series showdown with the Florida Marlins.
After the game, Boone talked with MLB.com's Mark Feinsand about his historic blast, the Yankees' remarkable comeback and his next opponents, the Marlins.
MLB.com: Does it get any better than this?
Boone: I don't know. This is pretty surreal. I still can't put it into words. It's unbelievable. You get humbled in this game, and this is certainly humbling.
MLB.com: After the way this series went for you, does it make this even sweeter?
Boone: I hadn't really swung the bat at all the way I'm capable of, which is frustrating when we're playing for what we're playing. To be out of the lineup and down 4-0, I didn't want to lose and go home with the feeling I had. These guys battled back, so many people had a hand in it, so I'm just thankful to have had the opportunity in the 11th.
MLB.com: When Roger Clemens gets knocked out of the game in the fourth, what's the feeling on the bench?
Boone: It was a little down, but Moose came in and got some big outs, which energized us. We had some better at-bats, Jason's two home runs, and it looked like Pedro got a little tired. The guys just came through and kept doing it. Then Superman Mo comes in and does his thing for three innings -- it was great.
MLB.com: Have you ever heard a stadium this loud?
Boone: I don't know. I don't even know if I could hear it, I was so locked in. Going in to the game, you're trying to focus on doing your thing. It's a crazy feeling.
MLB.com: Joe Torre said he told you to stay back and think about hitting the ball to right field. Did you?
Boone: He said to keep my front side in and think right-center, and that it wouldn't mean I wouldn't hit a home run. I took it to heart and put a good swing on it.
MLB.com: Did you know it was out when you hit it?
Boone: I knew I got it. To get a good pitch, get the sweet spot and stay through it, it was nice.
MLB.com: Is it only appropriate that this series went the way it did?
Boone: Absolutely. The season series was so close, we went to Game 7, and then to extra innings. It was fitting.
MLB.com: What are your thoughts on the Marlins?
Boone: They're really good in every aspect of the game. They play good defense, have good team speed and they pitch really well. They've shown a resiliency. Every time they're down, they get off the mat.
