Epstein's persistence pays off
BOSTON -- It's one thing to make a run at a prized player. It's quite another to be so determined in that quest that the work won't stop until the deal is complete.
If not for the persistence, preparation and dedication of Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein, the fact of the matter is that Curt Schilling would still be with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Instead, Epstein landed his most prized possession -- an ace to complement Pedro Martinez.
As it turned out, a Thanksgiving more than 2,000 miles from his family turned out to be more than rewarding for Epstein.
Epstein, club president/CEO Larry Lucchino and baseball operations assistant Jed Hoyer opened talks at Schilling's home in Paradise Valley, Ariz., on Wednesday.
