PITTSBURGH -- Unheralded Pirates Rob Mackowiak and Daryle Ward were named Tuesday as the National League's Co-Players of the Week for the week of May 24-30.

Mackowiak made national news Friday by hitting ninth-inning home runs in each game of Pittsburgh's doubleheader sweep of the Chicago Cubs on the same day that his first child was born. He batted .304 with three home runs and a Major League-best 12 RBIs for the week.

"It's been an amazing weekend," said Mackowiak. "To get this ... I'm at a loss for words. I'm very surprised. You never think anything like that can happen to you.

"Obviously, my son being born was the most important. This is just unbelievable for this to happen. Hopefully it can continue. We still have another four months to go."

Mackowiak's magic weekend nearly overshadowed Ward's history-making night earlier in the week. Wednesday, Ward went 4-for-5 with six RBIs and joined his father, Gary, in becoming the first father and son duo to hit for the cycle in the big leagues. For the week, Ward batted .458 with one home run and eight RBIs.

"To tell you the truth, I thought Mackowiak had it hands-down," said Ward. "I thought that was kind of cool that they were able to get us both in there. We've both been doing pretty well."

The big week offered Mackowiak and Ward a rare moment in the spotlight. Mackowiak has been a versatile role player throughout his four-year big league career. Ward, signed by Pittsburgh as a minor league free agent in January, began the season at Triple-A Nashville before being recalled on May 11.

"I'm proud of Daryle," said Mackowiak. "Daryle has done a [great] job for us. It's great for two guys on the same team [to win]."

"I always knew I was a big league ballplayer," said Ward. "You've just got to get the opportunity. When you go to another team, you've got to prove yourself all over again."

For winning the weekly award, Mackowiak and Ward were each presented with a luxury Swiss timepiece from Tourneau, the world's largest watch store.
