| NEW YORK -- Jason Giambi sat out his third consecutive game on Tuesday, as the first baseman was diagnosed with an intestinal parasite, explaining the reason for his recent sluggishness.
Giambi is being treated with antibiotics, and is considered day-to-day.
"It's not something you want to hear, but at the same time, it makes you feel good that they finally figured out what was going on," Giambi said. "That is the reason why I have been struggling, I have been so exhausted and so tired. It's been hard to get up for the games and try to play and try to get through them."
Giambi is mired in a 1-for-14 slump, with just 13 hits in his last 69 at-bats (.188). He was scratched from the first game of Sunday's day-night doubleheader and treated at a Manhattan hospital for dehydration. He was given a battery of blood tests, which revealed the parasite.
"It makes you kind of understand why you are getting jammed by guys that are throwing 88 mph," Giambi said. "It's comforting to know that there has kind of been a reason behind it. Now I can get well."
"I'm expecting him to feel better once [the medication] grabs hold of him," said manager Joe Torre. "We'll check with him every day."
