LCS umpires ready to go

| Two six-man umpiring crews have been named to officiate the American and National League Championship Series this week. Major League Baseball umpires Randy Marsh and Tim Welke have been selected as crew chiefs of the LCS crews.
Marsh will head up the ALCS umpiring crew for the Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees series and Welke will lead the NLCS umpiring crew for the series between the Houston Astros and the St. Louis Cardinals. This is the sixth LCS selection for Marsh and the fifth for Welke.
The crew chiefs will work at home plate on each of their respective crews. The remaining five umpire positions on the field will be filled by the rest of their crew. In addition to Marsh, the ALCS crew will include: Jeff Nelson (1B), John Hirschbeck (2B), Jim Joyce (3B), Jeff Kellogg (LF) and Joe West (RF). Joining Welke on the NLCS crew will be: Eric Cooper (1B), Gary Darling (2B), Mike Winters (3B), Angel Hernandez (LF) and Ed Rapuano (RF).
The two crew chiefs selected for this honor have many years of regular season and postseason exerience. Marsh is a 23-year major league umpiring veteran, while Welke has 21 years of major league umpiring experience.
Marsh became a member of the major league staff in 1982. He has worked the All-Star Game (1985, 88, 96), Division Series (1998, 99, 2001), League Championship Series (1989, 92, 95, 2000, 02) and World Series (1990, 97, 99). He umpired the Opening Series 2000 in Tokyo, Japan between the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets. He also is a crew chief during the regular season.
He previously worked in the Appalachian League (1968), Florida State League (1970-71), Eastern League (1972-73) and Pacific Coast League (1974-81). He attended the Al Somers Umpire School in 1968.
Welke became a member of the major league staff in 1984. He has worked the All-Star Game (1990), Division Series (1995, 96, 99, 2000), League Championship Series (1991, 98, 2001, 02) and World Series (1996, 2000). He also serves as a crew chief during the regular season.
He previously umpired in the Gulf Coast League (1977), Florida State League (1978-79), Eastern League (1980), American Association (1981-83), Florida Instructional League (1977-80) and Dominican Winter League (1981-83).
The postseason crew chiefs and umpires are chosen for Division Series, League Championship Series and World Series games as a reward for their performance throughout the regular season. This year's League Championship Series is the seventh selection for West, who will help call the shots in the Yankees-Red Sox series.
The umpiring crews for the 2004 World Series will be announced by Major League Baseball as they are assigned.
