OAKLAND -- The first part of Bobby Crosby's drive to the Orange County, Calif., airport Monday morning was, he admitted, "weird." He had a 10 a.m. flight to Oakland, but he wasn't sure if he'd have to make it.

The second part of the drive, and the rest of his day, were pure bliss.

After getting word from the A's that he'd indeed need to make that plane, Crosby smiled the rest of the way to the airport, and a few hours later he behind a microphone in the Bay Area, fielding questions as the Baseball Writers Association of America's 2004 American League Rookie of the Year.

"I'm having a pretty good day, to say the least," he said, noting that he'd already heard from several friends, including former teammates and coaches. "It's been a fun day, and it's gonna be a fun night."

The people who vote for postseason awards have made it clear: Crosby was head and shoulders above any other AL rookie this year.
