PHOENIX -- The Randy Johnson saga rolled on into Day 3 on Saturday with multiple
sources, including Major League Baseball's No. 2 official, saying that
details of the three-team deal had yet to be completed and that a
written agreement hadn't been submitted for Commissioner Bud Selig's
approval.
"The deal's not done yet," Bob DuPuy, MLB's president, chief operating
officer and second in command to Selig, told MLB.com. "As of the last
time I talked to Bud late this afternoon, it wasn't on his desk."
Arizona Diamondbacks officials and Greg Genske, the agent for the
Dodgers' Shawn Green, also said that the mega-deal was still in the
detail stages and that Selig would probably not see the terms until
Monday at the earliest. The trade would need approval by the
Commissioner because more than $1 million could be changing hands along
with at least 10 players.
"So far we have not been contacted by any team confirming there's a
trade in place or that the commissioner has approved a trade," Genske
told MLB.com on Saturday. "If, in fact, a trade is in place I expect the
clubs would notify us and at that time we would consider whether Shawn
might be willing to waive his no-trade clause or prefer to stay with the
Dodgers and play out the remainder of his contract."
The main components are Johnson going from the Diamondbacks to the
Yankees, Green from the Dodgers to Arizona and Javier Vazquez from New
York to Los Angeles. Also Dodgers left-hander Kazuhisa Ishii would go to
the Yankees, while Los Angeles would get two New York minor leaguers --
catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan. Arizona would also obtain right-handed pitchers Brad Penny and Yhency Brazoban along with Green from the Dodgers.
