ST. LOUIS -- Surely, at some point, the Cardinals' front office will take a holiday break. However, that point has not come yet, and it may not for another few days.
St. Louis elected not to tender a contract to outfielder So Taguchi, even though Taguchi is not yet arbitration-eligible. Per Major League rules, Taguchi could not be required to take more than a 20 percent pay cut, so the Redbirds chose to set him free. The team still holds interest in re-signing Taguchi, who has been an effective defensive replacement in his three years since coming to the United States.
"We would like to retain him," said assistant general manager John Mozeliak, "because we do think he has value to us."
