NEW YORK -- Call it a double-ring ceremony of a different kind. No wedded bless here, instead joy rekindled and joy recalled. Pedro Martinez and Doug Mientkiewicz received their World Series rings Tuesday.

Red Sox chairman of the board Tom Werner made an informal presentation to Martinez and Mientkiewicz in the back room of the Mets clubhouse before the game Tuesday.

And thereafter the jewelry played ring around the clubhouse. Everyone wanted a peek at Boston bling, even Braden Looper, whose ring from the Marlins' 2003 World Series championship ring dwarfs even the jewelry Werner lugged in.

"I would have preferred to still be with the team I won it with," said Mientkiewicz who has all sorts of baseball prizes, including an Olympic gold medal. "But I can't complain where I am. It makes you feel good all over again."

Martinez, who had created a stir with the apathy he expressed about the ring in the winter, was happy to accept it and to slide it on his skinny finger.

"Too big for me. I can't wear it. But I've got a lot more fingers," he said.

"The ring is nice. It's nice that he brought it down here. But what makes me happier is what we did for all the people who supported us for all those years. A long time from now, we'll be known as the team that won it after 86 years. I take a lot of pride and satisfaction in what we were able to do.

"And I wouldn't mind getting a few more."
