SAN FRANCISCO -- There was optimistic news on Tuesday regarding Barry Bonds, with Giants general manager Brian Sabean reporting that the rehabbing slugger took light batting practice on Monday and Tuesday.
"What that means in a greater theme of things, I'll know more tomorrow," said Sabean, who discussed Bonds' progress with Dr. Lewis Yocum, who is overseeing the players' rehab from three right knee surgeries in Los Angeles.
Sabean said Bonds' knee was tolerant to the activity, but the seven-time MVP was sore in his hands and upper torso, which was anticipated. Bonds has not had batting practice since Spring Training.
"It is a good first step toward getting back to baseball activity," said Sabean. He added that trainer Clive Brewster reported that Bonds' morning workouts involve therapy and strength exercises, as well as running in the afternoon.
There is no timetable for Bonds' return to the Giants, with Sabean indicating that won't happen until Yocum and Brewster OK it.
"It's in their hands, and we have full faith in how they've handled it and how it's going under their guise," said Sabean, unsure when he'll learn how soon Bonds could come back. "It's a day-to-day situation, but the good thing is he's building on what they're asking him to do. He's not standing still and he's not taken steps back. He's moving forward with everything they've asked him to do."
It's possible the 41-year-old Bonds will visit the Giants during their three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers next week, and Sabean said he may also be there.
