Brewers open road trip vs. Royals
Milwaukee (36-37) at Kansas City (21-49), Friday, 7:10 p.m. CT
The Royals have struggled to win games this season, but that does not mean Brewers right-hander Dave Bush is taking his Friday starting assignment any less seriously.
"No team goes 0-162. They're obviously beating somebody," said Bush, who will start the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. "It's almost like pitching in a game to the pitcher -- you have to remember that anyone with a bat can beat you at any time. That happened to me in my last start."
Bush settled for a no-decision in his most recent outing, despite limiting the Indians to two runs and four hits in eight solid innings. Both Cleveland runs scored on a stinging double off the bat of starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia.
Brewers pitchers have surrendered a hit to the opposing pitcher in five of the six Interleague games in their just-completed homestand. With the designated hitter rule in play this weekend, they will not have to worry about facing any Royals hurlers.
Familiar faces will be in short supply during the series. Royals catcher Paul Bako and outfielder Matt Stairs are former Brewers, but there are no former Royals on the Brewers' roster.
"I've seen some of those guys over there," said Bush, who made four career starts against the Royals while pitching for Toronto. "There have been changes over the last few years, but I faced a lot of them in Spring Training, too. I'll sit down with [pitching coach Mike] Maddux and come up with a plan for them."
The Brewers are 22-15 against the Royals since going 2-10 in 1995.
