The Orioles today announced they have re-signed free agent INF CHRIS GOMEZ to a one-year contract for the 2007 season. It will mark his third season with the Orioles.
Gomez, 35, batted .341 in 55 games for the Orioles this past season, starting at all four infield positions. He missed two months last season when he was hit by a pitch and suffered a broken bone in his left hand, returning to the active roster after the All-Star break. He had a career-high 18-game hitting streak in September, hitting safely in all 18 games in which he had an at-bat before going hitless on the final day of the seasojn, October 1. Gomez led all American League batters with a .437 batting average in September.
The 14-year veteran has a .260 career batting average for six different teams. In his first season with the Orioles, in 2005, he batted .279 in 89 games while playing all four infield positions.
