SAN DIEGO -- Giants left fielder Barry Bonds is expected to be sidelined for at least two or three days with a sprained right big toe, which he sustained in Saturday night's 6-0 loss to the San Diego Padres.

The all-time home run leader leaped to try to catch Adrian Gonzalez's second-inning drive, which went for a triple. Bonds landed awkwardly after reaching above the top of the left-field wall, where a fan with a fielder's glove also tried to snare the ball. Television replays indicated that the spectator might have deflected the ball away from Bonds.

"I asked Barry, 'Hey, did you catch that ball? What happened with that?'" Giants right-hander Matt Cain related. "He said it was in his glove. He felt like somebody knocked it out of there -- hit his arm or something. I'll take his word for it. I wouldn't think he'd make something up."

After the play, Bonds briefly sat on the outfield grass in obvious but not extreme discomfort as manager Bruce Bochy and trainer Dave Groeschner jogged to left field to check on him. Bonds remained in the game, but after making a running catch of a sacrifice fly hit by the next batter, Khalil Greene, he hopped on his left foot on the warning track, favoring his right foot. Bonds was removed from the game before the bottom of the third inning.

Bochy said that Bonds underwent X-rays, which were negative. Bonds, who singled sharply to center field in his only at-bat, has played in 125 of San Francisco's 148 games at age 43.

"He's pretty sore," Bochy said. "He's day-to-day. More than likely, [he'll be sidelined] two to three days, but we'll see how he's doing [Sunday]."
