They also will get another reminder of just how big baseball has become on this planet. PEOPLE "Sexiest Fan Alive" will be featured in that same issue, as part of a contest that the magazine and Major League Baseball launched on Friday.
Simply upload a photo of yourself or a friend. It should show true baseball spirit, along with your best pitch in 30 words or less about what makes you or your nominee so Clooney-like irresistible when it comes to being a passionate baseball fan. The contest is for males or females at least 21 years of age and the entry deadline is Oct. 7.
You will be entered for a chance to win two tickets to the 2008 World Series, a meet-and-greet with your favorite team, and, yes, inclusion in an ad in PEOPLE's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue. It might even be a big "break" of a lifetime.
"We are thrilled to partner with Major League Baseball for this exciting media event," said Paul Caine, publisher, the PEOPLE Group. "With anticipation building for both the MLB postseason and the selection of PEOPLE's 2007 Sexiest Man Alive, we look forward to engaging consumers in a unique way, during an important time for our organizations."
In addition to an ad in the Sept. 21 issue of PEOPLE and a call-to-action on People.com, there will be handouts of PEOPLE Sexiest Fan Alive scorecards at every Major League ballpark in the United States. In-stadium announcements and commercial spots on FOX and TBS will promote the event throughout the highly watched playoff season.
After all of the nominated photos have been uploaded by Oct. 7, a panel of judges will choose a field of nine finalists. This "lineup" will then be featured on People.com and voting will take place to determine the "Sexiest Fan Alive." The winner will be revealed in a promotional ad in the Nov. 26 PEOPLE "Sexiest Man Alive" issue.
"The 'Sexiest Fan Alive' promotion is a great fit for Major League Baseball," said Tim Brosnan, Executive Vice President, Business, Major League Baseball. "Having the chance to partner with the PEOPLE Magazine franchise in October -- an electric time for both of our consumers -- is terrific, and provides our fans and PEOPLE readers with the chance to have great fun."
The overall attendance record in Major League Baseball is expected to be shattered for the fourth consecutive season, and out of all of those fans, you know there are some serious candidates for this distinction. The question is, what defines "sexiest fan?" Well, for starters, you probably ought to look the part, and fortunately the MLB.com Shop is a veritable dressing room for this contest.
Guys, there is still nothing hotter than a customized jersey, unless it's a pair of those faded-letter team sleeves from Red Jacket to show off those guns.
Ladies, may we recommend something from the TOUCH by Alyssa Milano fashion line or some Antigua.
Now that you look the part, you have to put yourself out there. Find a ticket to a remaining game if you can, maybe even a Division Series. There will still be time to get that perfect hottie shot in one of those series and submit it for consideration. But that might not even sway the judges. You can send in this photo from anywhere around the world. Someone, somewhere, is going to be a big-time celebrity here at MLB.com in late November. That magazine issue will be a media sensation as usual -- even Clooney himself mentioned his recognition while speaking at the Oscars -- and here at MLB.com the focus will be on the "Sexiest Fan Alive."
The contest also will be featured with a full-page ad in both League Championship Series programs and the World Series program, in addition to in-park promotions and expected "Rally Monday" info distribution to fans.
Everyone knows that baseball fans are the sexiest in sports. What defines "sexy" as a fan? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Radiating passion as a fan, that's sexy. Wearing hot dog mustard all over your white customized Cubs or Angels jersey, that's not so sexy. So here's your chance, people. Brad Pitt. Vince Vaughn. Clooney. Who's out there in the stands to represent?
