Cook, Hirsh may be ready for NLCS
Pair of Colorado pitchers working back from injuries
DENVER -- The Rockies thought starting pitchers Aaron Cook and Jason Hirsh were out for the season. But they didn't realize their season would extend to the National League Championship Series, and now the two starters are ready to return.Cook and Hirsh are both eligible to come off the disabled list Oct. 7. A decision has yet to be made whether they will join the NLCS roster. "I'm saying I'll be back, but it still needs to be discussed," Cook said. Hirsh said, "I'd say 75 percent chance. Worst case, I come out of the 'pen." Cook threw 75 pitches in a simulated game on Saturday and is scheduled to start a game on Wednesday in the Arizona Fall League, which could put him in line to start Game 4 of the NLCS on Oct. 15 in Denver. Cook has not pitched for the Rockies since he injured his left oblique muscle on Aug. 10. He tried to return but was re-injured in a rehab start on Sept. 1 pitching for Triple-A Colorado Springs. He said he felt no pain and no setbacks in his simulated game on Saturday. "I've been able to throw all my pitches, which is a plus, because I got hurt throwing a slider and I was a little hesitant," Cook said. "But now I feel no pain, so I'm able to let it go." Hirsh threw 65 pitches in a bullpen session on Monday and said he felt good. He has not pitched since Aug. 7, when the Brewers' J.J. Hardy hit Hirsh in his right leg with a line drive. Hirsh continued to pitch and went six scoreless innings. An X-ray the following day revealed a fractured fibula. Hirsh had already spent almost a month on the disabled list after he sprained his right ankle on July 2 against the Mets. He was in his second start back. "It's been agonizing," Hirsh said. "Believe me. I want to be a part of it so bad. As fun as it is to celebrate now, I'd much rather contribute, that way I can feel like I'm part of the celebration."
