Though the 2008 season will mark the 40th year that the Pirates have trained in Bradenton, Fla., it will mark the first time that the Pirates will have been able to play under the lights.
Late last year, the Pirates and the city of Bradenton agreed on a new 30-year lease that included $18 million in renovations. Those renovations included the addition of lights to McKechnie Field, which up until now remained one of the oldest ballparks used for Spring Training not to have lights.
The first of the two night games will be on March 7, when the Pirates host Cincinnati. The second game will come nearly two weeks later when the Yankees come to Bradenton on March 19.
In all, the Pirates will play 32 spring games, 16 of which will be played in Bradenton. In addition, the Pirates will open play with their annual charity game against Manatee Community College on Feb. 27. The team will officially open its Spring Training schedule the following day when it heads to Clearwater, Fla., to take on the Phillies.
As usual, the Pirates offer three different Spring Training season-ticket packages for fans interested in attending all 16 home games. Those packages are already on sale and available for purchase on www.pirates.com.
Individual game tickets will be on sale beginning on Jan. 26, with ticket costs varying based on the Pirates' opponent. Also available are four different two-game ticket packages, two of which include tickets to see the Pirates take on the Yankees.
The full Spring Training schedule and more detailed information on these ticket packages, prices and availability can be found on the team's Web site.
