The remainder of the Hooks coaching staff will remain the same in 2008, with Stan Boroski returning as pitching coach, John Tamargo Jr. returning as hitting coach and Jamey Snodgrass returning as athletic trainer.
Pujols enters his 21st season of professional coaching, including his 13 years at the big league level. He joins the Astros organization after most recently serving four years as the first-base coach for the San Francisco Giants from 2003-06. Pujols joins a Double-A club that was 67-73 and finished in third place in the Texas League's South Division in 2007.
Before joining the Giants organization, Pujols was a bench coach for the Detroit Tigers under manager Phil Garner and in 2002 became just the second Dominican born manager in Major League history on April 8 after Garner was dismissed. Pujols held that post on an interim basis for the remainder of the 2002 season.
In 2001, Pujols served as manager of Detroit's Double-A club and was named manager of the American League squad for the Double-A All-Star Game. He served eight years on the Montreal big league coaching staff from 1993-2000. He played with Houston (1977-83), Kansas City (1984) and Texas (1985) during nine Major League seasons and was a member of the Astros' 1980 National League West championship team.
Boroski enters his second season as the Hooks pitching coach after serving as pitching coach at Class A Salem for four seasons. He previously worked as both a scout and coach for the Astros during the past 13-plus years.
The 2008 season will be Tamargo's fifth year as a coach in the Astros' Minor League system, having spent the 2004 season on the staff at Class A Salem and 2005-07 with Corpus Christi. Snodgrass begins his 10th season in the Astros organization and his fourth in Corpus Christi in 2008.
