Just how big a raise, however, remains to be seen.
The Red Sox exchanged salary figures with Youkilis and reliever Kyle Snyder on Friday, while also agreeing with reliever Javier Lopez on a new one-year deal. Youkilis is asking for $3.7 million through arbitration -- which would represent a healthy raise over the $424,500 he made last season -- while the Red Sox have countered with an offer of $2.5 million.
Youkilis has reason to expect a raise. In his second full season with the Red Sox, he helped stabilize the middle of the lineup, setting career highs with a .288 average and 16 home runs. Perhaps more impressive was his literally flawless defense -- in 135 games at first base, he didn't make an error.
"I'm not worried about making an error," Youkilis said after winning his first American League Gold Glove Award in November. "That's not something I worry about. I try to help the team win and try to get outs any way I can."
He wasn't alone -- he couldn't be for a team that won its second World Series title in four years with apparent ease. Lopez also played an important role for the Sox out of the bullpen, finishing second to Hideki Okajima with 61 appearances and stringing together a 3.10 ERA. In two seasons since joining the Sox, Lopez has posted a combined 2.98 ERA. He made $402,500 last season, just a shade over the Major League minimum.
On Friday, the two sides agreed to a non-guaranteed one-year contract, though the club declined to disclose financial details.
Like Lopez, Snyder enjoyed newfound success in the bullpen after struggling as a starter and long reliever the previous summer. In 54 1/3 relief innings with the Red Sox last year, Snyder allowed only 45 hits and finished with a 3.81 ERA. The 30-year-old righty made $535,000 last season, and he is asking for just over $1 million through arbitration. The Sox countered with an offer of $725,000.
Neither Youkilis nor Snyder is necessarily done negotiating. Arbitration hearings will take place from Feb. 1-21, and both sides have until then to hammer out a new agreement. Only if they can't will an arbitration panel will select one of the two figures released Friday, and award the player a binding one-year contract.
