Hard-throwing rookie left-hander optioned to Vero Beach
ST. PETERSBURG -- David Price will begin his professional career at Class A Vero Beach of the Florida State League.
Price, 22, was chosen by the Rays first overall in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of Vanderbilt University. After working out with the Rays all spring, the hard-throwing left-hander was optioned to the Minor Leagues on Tuesday after pitching against the Twins.
Price impressed throughout Spring Training, finishing his spring with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances while retiring six of the seven hitters he faced, striking out three and hitting one. In the process, his fastball hit 99 mph on several occasions.
