NEW YORK -- The Phillies' eight-game winning streak against the Mets was tested on Opening Day at Shea Stadium.
Though Philadelphia hasn't lost to New York since June 30, 2007, the Phillies hadn't beaten the Mets in seven Opening Days at Shea, until Tuesday afternoon's 5-2 victory in the stadium's final opener.
The Mets had outscored the Phillies, 26-9, in the first seven games and shut them out three times. The Phils' starting pitchers had posted a combined 2.94 ERA, allowing 16 earned runs in 49 innings.
Steve Carlton lost four times, in 1973, '75, '82 and '83. Three times he lost to fellow Hall of Famer Tom Seaver. Terry Mulholland dropped the '91 contest, Curt Schilling fell in '98 and Cole Hamels lost in '07.
Del Unser has the distinction of starting once for each team, and Willie Mays, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez and Mike Schmidt were among the Hall of Famers to appear in those games. Pete Rose started at first base in '82 and right field in '83.
Phillies-Mets Opening Day at Shea Stadium results:
1973: The Mets began their National League pennant year properly with a shutout win over the Phillies. Cleon Jones drove in all three runs with two homers off Carlton. Mets 3, Phillies 0.
1975: Dave Kingman homered for New York and Joe Torre drove in a run while playing third base. Dave Cash drove in a run for the Phillies. Carlton and Seaver both tossed complete games. Mets 2, Phillies 1.
1982: Lefty Randy Jones was too much for the Phillies, working five innings and allowing one run. Gary Matthews, now a Phillies broadcaster, started in left for the first of two seasons. Mets 5, Phillies 2.
1983: The Phillies would advance to the World Series, but couldn't solve Seaver. He bested Carlton for the third time, tossing six shutout innings, though Doug Sisk earned the win in relief. Right fielder Mike Howard and Brian Giles (no relation to the Giles brothers) drove in runs for New York. Mets 2, Phillies 0.
1991: On April 8, Dwight Gooden fanned seven in eight innings, allowed six hits to outduel Mulholland. Gregg Jefferies, then collecting a paycheck from the Mets, delivered an RBI double. Mets 2, Phillies 1.
1998: A 14-inning affair ended when Mets backup catcher Alberto Castillo singled off Ricky Bottalico. That gave the win to Turk Wendell. Schilling allowed two hits in eight shutout innings. Mets 1, Phillies 0.
2007: Hamels and John Maine matched up, with neither figuring in the decision. The Mets tagged the Phils' bullpen with seven eighth-inning runs. Mets 11, Phillies 5.
2008: Jayson Werth capped Philadelphia's three-run rally in the seventh with a tiebreaking RBI single. Phillies 5, Mets 2.
