PHILADELPHIA -- This spring, Daryle Ward hinted he wanted more playing time, and joked that he might have to "butter up" Cubs manager Lou Piniella.

On Friday against the Phillies, Ward made his first start in right field, and admitted after the game he felt a little rusty. He had trouble tracking down a double by Pat Burrell that went over his head, and was 0-for-4 at the plate, unable to get the ball out of the infield.

On Saturday, Ward was back on the bench in his more traditional role of pinch-hitter.

"He was going to butter me up -- his comment this spring was that I was going to get buttered up so he could play more," Piniella said. "I can put him a little bit in right, I can put him a little bit in left, I can put him a little bit at first. I certainly can't play him at short, or second, or center, and I know he doesn't want to catch."

Ward will definitely get more playing time during Interleague Play in June when the Cubs travel to Toronto and Tampa Bay.

"I'm trying to work him in when I can," Piniella said.

Kosuke Fukudome did not start for the first time this season on Saturday, and Mark DeRosa subbed in right field, with Reed Johnson in center. Fukudome played center on Friday with Ward in right.

Another player Piniella wants to get some work is pitcher Rich Hill, who spent Saturday and Sunday in the bullpen. Hill was pulled from his start on Thursday after three innings because he was struggling, and he won't be back in the rotation until Friday or Saturday in the Cubs' series against Pittsburgh.

"I'd like to get Hill a nice appearance out of the bullpen if we can," said Piniella, hoping for more than one inning of work for Hill.
