PHILADELPHIA -- Chris Snelling is back, again.
The journeyman outfielder returned to the Major Leagues with his fourth organization, the beneficiary of Shane Victorino being placed on the 15-day disabled list. Snelling will back up the corner outfield spots and serve as Phillies manager Charlie Manuel's second lefty bat off the bench.
"My mentality is, as long as I'm here, I'll do whatever it takes to help out the team," Snelling said. "Whatever role that is."
Snelling joined the Phillies in the offseason as a potential bench option, though that situation became clouded when the team added free agent So Taguchi.
While Snelling didn't help himself by hitting .193 in Spring Training, he's not sure a better performance would've mattered.
"It's a numbers game, and I knew coming in it probably wasn't going to happen," Snelling said. "It is what it is. I understand that. I'm not bitter about it. I told myself this year that I just wanted to play."
That comment stems from the fact that Snelling has had difficulty staying healthy, with assorted knee injuries. He endured a rough start with a Triple-A Lehigh Valley team that has started the season 0-11.
Just don't bring up the fact that he's healthy.
"I'm not answering your question," Snelling said, "because as soon as I do, something will happen."
