CHICAGO -- Cubs shortstop Ryan Theriot was a late scratch Monday night because of lower back spasms.

Theriot was riding a seven-game hitting streak and batting .481 in the last six games with a homer, four RBIs, four doubles and a triple. His status is day-to-day.

Right fielder Kosuke Fukudome did return to the Cubs starting lineup Monday after missing one game to get treatment for a cyst above his right eye. Fukudome leads the Major Leagues in pitches per plate appearance (4.58), and also has six hits when putting the first pitch of an at-bat in play.

Alfonso Soriano, on the disabled list with a strained right calf, was in uniform on Monday but did not take batting practice. He is expected to be activated when his 15 days are up, in time for the Cubs' series against Milwaukee.

Reliever Scott Eyre, rehabbing a strained left elbow, threw in Mesa, Ariz., at extended Spring Training, and is expected to begin a rehab assignment soon. Pitcher Chad Fox, meanwhile, will join Class A Daytona to begin his rehab assignment. Fox has not pitched in the big leagues since 2005, because of problems with his right elbow, and is trying to make a comeback.
