Ausmus shocked by shark attack
An avid surfer, Astros catcher familiar with site of tragedy
ST. LOUIS -- Brad Ausmus is an avid surfer during the offseasons in his hometown of San Diego, and he was particularly jarred by the news that a 66-year-old man was killed by what authorities believe was a great white shark early Friday morning.
Ausmus has been a semi-regular at Tide Beach, an area approximately 13 miles from San Diego, where the attack occurred. According to reports, the victim, Dave Martin, was a swimmer training with several triathletes at the beach.
"That particular spot, I've been there half a dozen, 10 times," Ausmus said. "You don't hear of it a lot, of shark attacks in Southern California. They're also rare in Northern California."
Despite the tragedy, Ausmus said he wouldn't be afraid to surf in that area in the future.
"Probably not," he said. "If lightning strikes, would you stop going out in the rain?"
