"I just felt I'd give him today and allow him to do some work, just give him a little rest," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
Cano, 25, was 0-for-2 in the Yankees' loss on Friday at Cleveland and is hitless in his last 11 at-bats. Cano has just three hits in 24 at-bats on the current road trip.
A .306 hitter last year and a .342 batter the year before, Cano is batting .156 with one home run and five RBIs in 24 games this year. Girardi said he does not believe Cano -- a slow starter last season as well -- has been chasing bad pitches.
"I've said all along, he's had good at-bats," Girardi said. "He doesn't show a ton of frustration, but obviously when you're as good a player as Robbie Cano and things aren't going your way, you're going to get a little bit frustrated. That's just human nature."
The Yankees started Jose Molina at catcher, Alberto Gonzalez at second base, Shelley Duncan in right field and Alex Rodriguez at designated hitter, leaving New York with a $45.1 million bench -- Bobby Abreu ($16 million), Cano ($3 million), Hideki Matsui ($13 million) and Jorge Posada ($13.1 million).
Girardi said he was fine with the wealth of riches accompanying him.
"You can't play your regulars every day," Girardi said. "You pick a day here and there where you're going to give guys off. There's no reason to have the extra guys if you're not going to play them."
