PITTSBURGH -- Brewers closer Eric Gagne expects to know more on Wednesday about the severity of a right shoulder injury that forced him out of another tough outing on Tuesday night.

Gagne, removed and then reinstated as Milwaukee's closer last week, inherited a 7-0 lead in the ninth inning and surrendered two Pirates runs on two hits and two walks. He exited after two-thirds of an inning complaining of tightness in his shoulder.

"It wasn't really pain, it was just stiffness," Gagne said. "It feels like I slept on it or something. It just wouldn't get warm."

Gagne compared the sensation to soreness after a good, long workout.

"I've never had a shoulder problem, really, ever," Gagne said. "I've had stiffness when I'm throwing, but it would always go away."

Gagne walked the first hitter he faced, induced a fielder's choice groundout and then a two-run home run to Jason Bay down the left-field line. He could have been out of the inning had third baseman Bill Hall been able to catch Adam LaRoche's foul pop -- Hall was charged with a tough error -- but he walked LaRoche, surrendered a single and then left the game.

"He hasn't been on any medical reports, so I don't really know where it came from," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "He just was a little stiff and tight and sore. We'll see where that develops."
