Gardner adds shoulder to ailment list
Willingham continues rehab on back; pitchers progressing
MIAMI -- Marlins reliever Lee Gardner, on the disabled list since April 18 with right elbow inflammation, now is experiencing shoulder discomfort.
Before his elbow injury, Gardner was handling a number of roles out of the bullpen, including long relief. He's appeared in seven games and has logged 6 2/3 innings. Gardner had an MRI, and his light throwing schedule has been put on hold. As Gardner rests his shoulder, left fielder Josh Willingham continues his range-of-motion back routine. On the DL with a strained lower back and a herniated disc, Willingham remains two to three weeks away from resuming baseball activities. Starting pitchers Josh Johnson and Anibal Sanchez -- both recovering from surgeries -- are facing batters, but are months away. Johnson, who had Tommy John elbow surgery last August, has been throwing bullpen sessions and live batting practice. The right-hander probably wouldn't be available until August at the earliest. Sanchez, a right-hander who had shoulder surgery last June, threw 30 pitches of live batting practice Friday. An estimated return is the All-Star break. Center fielder Alejandro De Aza, who has a left ankle sprain, is running, throwing and hitting at the team's complex in Jupiter, Fla. Right-hander Sergio Mitre, out with a forearm strain, is light tossing in Jupiter.Joe Frisaro is a reporter for MLB.com.
