MIAMI -- The Steve Kline experiment ended unceremoniously Wednesday, when the Phillies released the veteran left-hander from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

A day after the pitcher was suspended for bumping umpire Mike Eastabrook, the Phillies released Kline, who had posted a 5.16 ERA and allowed left-handers to hit .341 off him in 20 appearances with the IronPigs.

Kline signed a Minor League deal with the Phillies on April 10, less than two weeks after the Giants released him. Philadelphia, with only J.C. Romero in the bullpen, had hoped Kline would pitch well enough to be a complementary piece.
