ATLANTA -- Chipper Jones and Yunel Escobar were held out of the starting lineup on Sunday for the second straight game, but both could pinch-hit if needed during the Braves' series finale against the Mariners.

Jones, who had a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning of Saturday's 5-4 win, said before Sunday's game that he was still bothered by his strained right quadriceps.

"A little bit [better], but not anywhere close," Jones said when asked how he was feeling.

The third baseman reinjured the right quad while attempting to score from second base during the fourth inning of Friday's game. The injury, which was diagnosed last week as a small tear, has nagged Jones for more than two months.

After Jones' pinch-hit single on Saturday, he was immediately removed for a pinch-runner. A similar scenario could play out on Sunday, Braves manager Bobby Cox said.

"He's a good weapon to have," Cox said of Jones, whose .393 batting average leads the Majors.

Cox also opted to rest Escobar's strained right hip flexor another day. Cox said that the Braves' shortstop, who was injured while avoiding a tag at home on Friday, could be in the lineup for Monday's series opener against Milwaukee.

"The trainers are worried about him, though," Cox said. "Those things can go on for a couple of months."

Omar Infante got his second consecutive start at shortstop on Sunday, hitting second. Ruben Gotay, who on Saturday hit his first home run since July 12, 2007, again started at third base.

During Saturday's game, the normally sure-handed Infante made two first-inning errors at shortstop. Gotay also booted a ball at the hot corner.

Jeff Francoeur, who is in a 2-for-18 slump, was given a scheduled day off on Sunday. The Braves' right fielder was hit by a pitch twice in the past two games, once above the left elbow and another in between the left ring and pinky fingers.

"I just needed a day, I've gotten hit so much," Francoeur said.

"I don't know how it didn't break his hand," Cox said. "He's tough, boy. He didn't come out."

With Francoeur out of the lineup, Brandon Jones made his first start of the season in right field.
