The club has not placed Ramirez on the bereavement list and he is expected back for Thursday's finale against the Giants.
Ramirez went 0-for-13 while the team got swept by the White Sox over the weekend to drop his average below .300. Ramirez is hitting .289 with 14 home runs and 55 RBIs for the first-place Cubs.
Mark DeRosa and Ronny Cedeno are the other Cubs with experience at third this year, making them logical replacements.
The team is already stretched thin with injuries to outfielders Alfonso Soriano and Reed Johnson, which forced DeRosa to the outfield against the White Sox.
