SAN DIEGO -- A left hip strain has landed Matt Treanor on the 15-day disabled list and created more urgency for the Marlins to bring in experienced catching help.

Treanor, 32, has been battling through discomfort, but in Monday's 3-1 win over the Padres, he injured himself while running the bases. Respected for his handling of the pitching staff and defense, Treanor is going on the disabled list for the second time in his Major League career. In August 2006, he served a stint with a left shoulder strain.

To replace Treanor, the Marlins have selected the contract of Triple-A Albuquerque catcher John Baker.

Baker had a hectic Monday, catching 13 innings and going 2-for-5 for the Isotopes in a 4-3 loss at Oklahoma. The 27-year-old is joining his first big league roster.

"There is no words to describe it for me," said Baker, who is expected to make his first big league start on Wednesday in the afternoon series finale with the Padres at PETCO Park. "We had a 13-inning game last night, and I got home at 12:30 [a.m.]. I didn't know how to react."

Baker said he had to go back to the field in Oklahoma City to get his equipment, but the park was locked. Someone came by about 45 minutes later to let him in.

"When I got back to my hotel room, about 20 guys came by to wish me congratulations," Baker said.

Treanor, who won the starting job from Mike Rabelo earlier in the season, exited in the eighth inning on Monday.

Baker came up in the Oakland system, and he has been with Albuquerque since 2007. In 59 games, he is hitting .316 with six home runs and 31 RBIs. A patient hitter, he has struck out 34 times in 193 at-bats, and he's drawn 24 walks. He was recently selected to be in the Pacific Coast League All-Star Game on July 16.

He noted that he would be happy to miss the PCL All-Star Game if it means he is with the Marlins through the MLB All-Star break, which begins after Sunday's games.

In recent weeks, Baker had been splitting catching duties in Albuquerque with Rabelo, who was optioned to Triple-A on June 23.

Rabelo has dealt with his own ailments. On Tuesday, he was placed on the seven-day Minor League disabled list. According to Larry Beinfest, the Marlins' president of baseball operations, Rabelo is banged up. He is dealing with a sore hand and leg.

Treanor was to undergo an MRI on Tuesday, and he said he's felt discomfort in his lower abdomen since June 21 in Oakland.

As of the start time of the Marlins-Padres game on Tuesday, the team didn't know the results of Treanor's medical tests.

The Marlins have been exploring trade options for an experienced catcher for a while. Colorado's Yorvit Torrealba, David Ross of the Reds and Kansas City's Miguel Olivo are possibilities. Treanor, a backup until this season, has never been in more than 67 games (2006) at the big league level. He's already been used in 54 games this season, and he's batting .240 with two home runs and 18 RBIs.

Paul Hoover replaced Treanor in the eighth inning on Monday, and he was in the starting lineup on Tuesday.

Hoover and Baker split catching duties for the Isotopes for a bulk of the first half. Hoover caught three days and Baker two.

Hoover, 32, has a total of 23 MLB games and 59 big league at-bats. This season, he's appeared in eight games and he is batting .240 (6-for-25).

"I come to the field every day like I'm playing," Hoover said. "I sit in on our meetings. I follow the game closely. I watch film, trying to see what our guys can do and what their guys can do to counteract them. I prepare every day to play, and as far as the scouting and stuff, I feel I'm prepared."

The Marlins also announced that reliever Lee Gardner was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

"With Matt, I don't know the severity of it," Hoover said. "I know he's been battling it for a little while. I hope he gets healthy real soon."
