Royals claim Newman off waivers
Left-hander had previously pitched in relief for Rockies
KANSAS CITY -- The Royals claimed left-handed reliever Josh Newman off outright waivers from the Colorado Rockies on Friday.
Newman, 26, was assigned to Triple-A Omaha and placed on the Royals' 40-man roster. To make room, Kansas City placed pitcher Ryan Braun, recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery, on the 60-day disabled list.
Newman pitched in relief eight times for the Rockies this year and had a 9.35 ERA. For Triple-A Colorado Springs, he was 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 22 innings.
In 150 Minor League relief appearances, Newman has a 16-9 record and 3.12 ERA. He was a Texas League All-Star in 2006. A 19th-round Draft choice in 2004, he's a product of Ohio State University and Wheelersburg (Ohio) High School.
