Phils activate Seanez, option Cervenak
Pitcher spent two weeks rehabbing inflamed right shoulder
SAN DIEGO -- The need for an extra arm in the bullpen trumped the need for a fifth hitter off the bench, so the Phillies swapped Rudy Seanez and Mike Cervenak.Seanez returned from the 15-day disabled list before Saturday's game, after two rehab outings with Triple-A Lehigh Valley and Class A Lakewood, respectively. His assistance is required to help an exhausted bullpen. The Phillies would like to lighten the load of Chad Durbin, who has appeared in a career-high 51 games, a significant number for a pitcher transitioning to relief work. Surviving the move is Les Walrond, who provides the ability to work multiple innings, for the 13-man pitching staff.
"We don't want to get caught short, so we'll go with one less position player," manager Charlie Manuel said. The Phillies will likely return to 12 pitchers early next week, when third baseman Pedro Feliz is expected to return from the disabled list. He's scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Lehigh Valley on Sunday. Cervenak received six at-bats in his second big league callup, collecting his first Major League hit and RBI along the way.
