ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter threw off flat ground on Tuesday and reported no problems. Carpenter plans to repeat the process on Wednesday.

"I think it went OK," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said.

Carpenter has been out since his Aug. 10 start in Chicago when he experienced shoulder pain and had to leave the game.

The Cardinals are hopeful of getting him back in the rotation for the stretch run, but want to make sure the righty is completely healthy before taking that step.

"He played light catch today -- you keep advancing it based on how he feels," La Russa said.
