SAN FRANCISCO -- The Padres activated oft-injured catcher Josh Bard from the 15-day disabled list before their game Friday at AT&T Park against the San Francisco Giants.

Bard, who has missed 67 games this season after two stints on the disabled list, wasn't in the starting lineup Friday. Rookie catcher Nick Hundley got the start behind the plate.

Bard went on the disabled list Aug. 9 (retroactive to Aug. 7) with a strained right triceps.

Bard suffered the injury on the last swing of the last round of early batting practice prior to a game on Aug. 8 in Denver against Colorado.

Bard, who is hitting .209 this season with one home run and 12 RBIs in 44 games, missed 54 games earlier this season when he suffered a high ankle sprain.

To make room for Bard on the 25-man roster, the Padres optioned catcher Luke Carlin to Triple-A Portland.

Carlin was hitting .154 in 91 at-bats over two stints with the Padres, with one home run and six RBIs. He was hitting .328 in 22 games with the Beavers this season.
