McLouth, Doumit sit out on Saturday
Catcher could return on Sunday; center fielder still on mend
MILWAUKEE -- Center fielder Nate McLouth and catcher Ryan Doumit were out of Saturday's starting lineup, but Doumit is expected to start on Sunday.
Doumit left in the middle of the seventh inning of Friday night's loss with symptoms of dehydration. He showed signs of improvement after the game, but not enough to risk nine innings behind the plate on Saturday.
"Doumit felt a little queasy [on Saturday]," Pirates manager John Russell said. "He told me that if he needed to play, he could."
Russell had planned on sitting Doumit in one of the final two games with the Brewers, so Raul Chavez started behind the plate on Saturday night. Doumit was available for pinch-hitting duties on Saturday, Russell said.
McLouth's return date is tougher to nail down, but he took a turn for the better the last two days and even joined teammates for a pregame meal on Saturday. McLouth hasn't played since Monday due to a stomach virus. He had a mononucleosis test come back negative and is awaiting results on blood work done on Thursday.
"He's feeling better; last night, he kind of turned the corner," said Russell, who said it was doubtful that McLouth could pinch-hit on Saturday. "The consensus, without getting the test results back, is he's on the back side of this."
