Larish to practice third in AFL

DETROIT -- Tigers prospect Jeff Larish is headed to the Arizona Fall League for the second consecutive year. This time, however, he appears to be headed for the hot corner.

The AFL announced its rosters on Tuesday evening, including a half-dozen Tigers prospects to take part in the developmental league with the Mesa Solar Sox. Larish is the one Detroit player returning to the league, but he'll likely be doing so to get some work at third base rather than simply first.

The move is expected to increase his versatility and eliminate the biggest road block in his path to the big leagues -- a young, sweet-hitting first baseman in Detroit named Miguel Cabrera.

Larish played third base during part of his collegiate career at Arizona State, but until this year, his entire pro career had been as a first baseman. When Detroit called him up in May once Gary Sheffield landed on the disabled list, he was used almost exclusively as a designated hitter, with an occasional start at first.

The Tigers eventually optioned him back to Triple-A Toledo. Manager Jim Leyland said he would like to see Larish get some work at third base, at least during infield practice. He ended up starting nine games at third, starting the learning process that will continue this fall.

Larish entered Tuesday batting .250 in 102 games for the Hens with 21 home runs and 64 RBIs.

Another Detroit callup from this summer headed to Arizona is outfielder Clete Thomas, who opened the season with the Tigers when Curtis Granderson was on the DL and earned another call earlier this summer. He entered Tuesday batting .248 for Toledo with nine home runs and 44 RBIs.

Four other Detroit farmhands will join the Solar Sox pitching staff, including Toledo reliever Casey Fien, Double-A Erie's Rudy Darrow and Luis Marte along with Class A Lakeland's Zach Simons. Fien, who spent last year at low Class A West Michigan, started the season with a big jump as the closer at Double-A Erie, posting a 3-3 record with a 2.96 ERA and 12 saves, before stepping up to the Mud Hens. He's 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA in 11 Toledo appearances.

One Tigers slot on the team has yet to be announced.

The Arizona Fall League season begins on Tuesday, Oct. 7 and runs through Saturday, Nov. 22 with the annual league championship game. Games take place Monday through Saturday.
