The Mets acquired Nixon, 34, in a midseason trade with the Diamondbacks as a possible replacement for the injured Moises Alou. Finishing 2-for-3 with two walks in his Mets debut the following evening, Nixon produced only four more hits the rest of the year. He hit the disabled list with a strained groin in late June, and eventually underwent season-ending hernia surgery.
He finished his season with a .171 average and one home run in 35 at-bats.
A key contributor to Boston's success over the first part of this decade, Nixon hit 134 home runs over 10 seasons with the Red Sox. But he had all but slipped into a permanent platoon role by the time the Indians signed him prior to the 2007 season, and spent the first half of 2008 attempting -- albeit quite successfully -- to raise his stock within the Diamondbacks' Minor League system.
Yet not long after the Mets traded for Nixon, Daniel Murphy emerged as a much younger and more promising lefty-swinging threat for the Mets. Murphy's presence in left field next season, along with Ryan Church's renewed health, should prevent the Mets from attempting to re-sign Nixon.
Nixon became the 11th Met to file for free agency this offseason. Every eligible player of note from last season's roster has now filed for free agency.
