Loewen's transition under way for Jays
Pitcher-turned-first baseman swinging for CaneFires in Hawaii
TORONTO -- Adam Loewen's transition from the mound to the field is under way in Hawaii. Suiting up for the West Oahu CaneFires, Loewen has been testing his skills in the batter's box and getting used to wearing a first baseman's glove.
The Blue Jays signed Loewen -- once a top pitching prospect with the Orioles -- to a two-year Minor League contract on Oct. 24, providing him with an opportunity to continue his baseball career after arm injuries derailed his future on the mound. The early results clearly show that Loewen is very much a work in progress.
Through six games, including four starts at first base, Loewen has hit .200 with three hits in 15 at-bats. The left-handed-hitting Loewen has drawn four walks, helping him to a .381 on-base percentage, and has contributed one RBI and two runs scored. It's been estimated that Loewen will need at least 1,000 professional at-bats before potentially being ready for the big leagues.
The 24-year-old Loewen -- a native of Surrey, British Columbia -- was selected by Baltimore with the fourth overall pick in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, representing the highest a Canadian-born player has been taken. Over the past three years with the Orioles, Loewen went 8-8 with a 5.38 ERA in 35 games, including 29 starts.
This past season, Loewen battled a familiar left elbow injury and finished 0-2 with an 8.02 ERA in seven games for the O's. In 2007, Loewen had surgery to insert a pin in his pitching elbow to stabilize a stress fracture in the joint. Loewen experienced the same injury again this year and decided that his best path back to the baseball field was to abandon pitching.
