MILWAUKEE -- Brewers general manager Doug Melvin had not heard back from CC Sabathia's representatives by the close of business on Tuesday, and he did not sound particularly eager to pick up the phone and place the call himself.
At some point, the Brewers need to know whether they have a legitimate shot at Sabathia, because they will not move on to pursue other free agents or trade possibilities until then. Melvin still will not confirm the Brewers' offer -- reported to be five years at $100 million -- and he chuckled at how quickly the Yankees' initial offer -- reported at six years and $140-145 million -- leaked out to the media on Friday.
Sabathia is represented by agents Greg Genske and Brian Peters. Melvin last spoke with them in the middle of last week, when Genske said that Sabathia would entertain offers from other teams.
"I didn't have any time today [to call]," said Melvin, who was not sure what kind of response he would get from Genske's office. "If I get a chance [Wednesday], maybe. I don't have any set day to do something."
Melvin admitted he got a fair amount of reaction for his comment last week that the Yankees were "overbidding" for Sabathia by exceeding the Brewers' offer -- the only other formal overture to Sabathia reported so far -- by such a significant amount. He took issue with a headline on a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report that said he was "baffled" by the Yankees' offer.
"I wasn't baffled by what they are doing," Melvin said. "I do think it's funny that the Yankees make their bid, and a couple of hours later it's on ESPN."
Genske and Peters have not returned multiple phone calls from MLB.com since the Brewers made their initial offer on Nov. 1.
